The Federation Arch at St Kilda junction consists of six freestanding sandblasted stainless steel columns which traverse the intersection. Each column symbolizes one of the original British colonies. During the day each column adopts a somber glow representing the solidity of our nation. At the western most column the words of the constitution are embossed (in various languages symbolizing our acceptance + understanding of the different cultures which contribute to this city) around the plinth. The names of famous Australians will be etched into the bases of the other five columns. At night laser lights connect the columns, symbolizing the unification of the colonies under the Act of Federation and creating a night arch over the junction.
