LabX Photographic Laboratory + Gallery

2000
St Kilda, Victoria, Australia

A commercial film laboratory was relocated into a 1960 warehouse. The relocation caused a review of our client’s operations. The result of that review was to their desire to provide a one-stop shop for professional photographers where they could hire studio space, purchase and process film and accommodate models, ad agencies, props and so on. A gallery for photographs was added to the brief and this became the key spatial gesture in the design. Visitors must pass through it en route to the studio space. It has a seamless floor/wall junction – in deference to the cyclorama walls of the studios beyond. A new façade of sandblasted glass was inserted into the existing wire-cut brick warehouse. Existing cross bracing behind the glass coincidently provided us with a sign that we enhanced with green neon lights.
